Linux Distributions list
  [Printable Version]

Linux comes with many flavours, that's what they call distribution or shorter words, "distro". This is the list of well known distro.

Major Distributions
  •
Caldera  This distribution is geared towards businesses. It has a wonderful reseller program, and some believe it is the easiest Linux installation.
  •
Conectiva  The most popular distributions in Latin America. If you are a native Spanish speaker than you need this distro.
  •
Corel Linux  Corel is the new kid in the block, but many users confirm it is the easiest Debian distribution to install and use out of the box.
  •
Debian  This is the only major distribution that is still maintained by thousands of developers from all over the world. The main distribution has ONLY free (as in free speech and free beer) programs. True to the original Linux spirit.
  •
Linux PPC  Another distribution for the PowerPC architecture. This is The"Offical" (if there is such a thing) home of the Linux Port for the PPC architecture
  •
Mandrake  A RedHat based distribution that is optimized for the Pentium class processor. If you have a 486 don't use this distro. Even though this is based on RedHat, Mandrake has added value to their version of GNU/Linux through nice installation and configuration programs as-well-as the optimization for Pentiums.
  •
Red Hat  The most popular Linux distribution in the USA. Primarily a distro for servers but can be used on the desktop. Easy to install and maintain with RPM. Many other distributions are based on a version of RedHat which testifies to the distributions' quality.
  •
Slackware  One of the oldest Linux distributions. Geared mainly towards intermediate and advanced users. It is perhaps the most UNIX like of all Linux distributions. If you are use to BSD Unix than Slackware may be for you.
  •
SuSE  The most popular Linux distribution in Europe. SuSE has by far the most complete collection of extra software included in a distribution. Over 3 Gigs worth! They are also know for their work with XFree.org to get drivers for certain types of video cards supported in XFree86.
  •
TurboLinux  The most popular Linux distribution in Asia. They have a separate Workstation and Server version of their distribution but they're know primarily for their work on clustering for Linux
  •
Yellow Dog Linux  A distribution for the PowerPC architecture. If you have a G3 or G4 this is the distribution to use.
Mandrake
  •
Linux Mandrake Demos and Tutorial Center  This section of Madnrake's site allows you to demo some of their applications. Quite cool.
  •
Mandrake User's Guide
