Transactional Java database features improved performance and concurrency

EMERYVILLE Calif., January 30, 2006 Sleepycat Software, makers of the worlds most widely deployed open source developer databases, today announced the general availability of version 2.1 of Berkeley DB Java Edition. The new version of Sleepycats pure Java, transactional database features multi-key secondary databases, multi-threaded performance improvements, and new controls for optimizing concurrency. With increasing adoption from both open source and commercial customers, Berkeley DB Java Edition has become a leading open source Java database for developers of high performance systems.

We use Berkeley DB Java Edition in our Shinola(SM) automated advertising solution because it is the best choice to keep up with the volume and response times we require, said Drew Farris, lead engineer at TextWise. Nothing beats the performance of Berkeley DB Java Edition for storing performance-critical data right where it needs to be. We eliminated a large number of costly remote procedure calls to our back-end relational databases. In addition, its flexibility allows us to optimize the data that is retained in the store, which helps us avoid the overhead inherent in other object caching solutions.

With this new version, we continue to enhance Berkeley DB Java Edition with a focus on performance for highly concurrent systems, said Mike Olson, CEO of Sleepycat Software. Berkeley DB Java Edition is the ideal choice for developers seeking fast, local persistence with zero administration and a pure Java solution.

Berkeley DB Java Edition is a pure Java, transactional database for developers of high performance systems. The latest release of Sleepycat Softwares Berkeley DB Java Edition boasts new features, improved performance and better support for highly concurrent applications.

New features in Berkeley DB Java Edition version 2.1 include:
Multi-key secondary databases providing direct support for many-to-many and one-to-many relationships
Multi-threaded performance improvements using Java 5
Controls to enable developers to optimize concurrency and minimize lock contention: non-locking mode and multiple lock tables
New documentation Writing Transactional Applications with Berkeley DB Java Edition

Availability
Berkeley DB Java Edition 2.1 is available immediately under a dual license. A no-cost open source license permits redistribution if the application using Berkeley DB Java Edition is open source. A commercial license is available for redistribution of proprietary applications. Berkeley DB Java Edition is available for download at:
