What is DistroWatch Timesavers? |
| DistroWatch has developed into a major resource of Linux information on the Internet. It did not meant to go this way, but the bewildering number of Linux distributions and the constantly evolving development of amazing ideas has contributed to this site's growing popularity. Maintaining the site has become a full-time job.
Despite the amount of information already present on the site, my inbox keeps filling up with long overdue requests for new features. First the good news: many of the requested features will be implemented in the near future. Now the bad news: they will not be free. However, the price is tiny: a one-off payment of US$17.50 to access all the new features described below...

| |
Custom Comparisons |
| This is something that gets most requests. You want to be able to compare any version of any distribution with any other you choose. The custom comparisons feature will let you do just that - you will be able to compare Gentoo's unstable branch with Slackware 3.3 if you wish (and if it makes sense to you) together with up to 10 other distributions.
You will even get presets for comparing certain distribution categories. Wish to compare all distribution that provide a PPC edition? You will be able to do this with just one click. Want to see all distribution supporting the Chinese language, side by side in a nice table? Again, just one click will get you there. All development versions? All Debian-based distributions? Likewise, one click is all you'll need.
|
|
| |
Searches |
| A search function is another frequent request. This feature will enable you to search the distribution list based on certain criteria. For example, you will be able to list all distributions and their versions that ship with a certain version of KDE, Apache or any other package tracked by DistroWatch. You will be able to get a list of all distributions supporting certain architecture or journaled file system. You will get a chance to search the news and article sections too. A great timesaver, no doubt!

List of Up-to-date Mirrors |
| Many of you know how frustrating it is to search for a fast, available mirror carrying your favourite Linux distribution, especially shortly after its release. This service will list these mirrors for you. We will do all the hunting and keep the list as up-to-date as possible, so that you don't have to. You have to admit that this feature alone is worth the asking price of US$17.50! No more searching for mirrors - you simply come to DistroWatch for the most reliable mirror list of all major Linux distributions!

Other Features |
| It's tempting to say "...and much more", but that would be a lie :-) However, if you become a member of DistroWatch Timesavers, your requests will be given the highest priority and will receive serious consideration. Things like an option to turn off all advertising on the site will more than likely be available. All these features will take some time to program and test, but should be completed before the end of 2003. Let us know what else you'd like to see here and what would give you even more value.

The Introductory Offer |
| So that's the business model. Remember, this is not a subscription - this is a one-off payment that will open the doors to all the new features mentioned in the previous paragraphs. You will not be asked to pay again. One payment of US$17.50 is all it takes to join the DistroWatch Timesavers and enjoy the benefits. Join today, if you value your time!
Note: those of you who have previously supported DistroWatch with a donation are considered members and will be granted access to all the new features without any further payments.

| Updates |
| 2003-11-28 The Timesavers features are finally being coded by a third-party developer team which has made a solid progress, so look for new announcements soon. Please note that the current pricing (US$17.50) will remain in effect until the work is completed, but will likely be revised soon afterwards.

| 2003-09-12 Just a quick update on the status of Timesavers features. I am currently working a promised review of LindowsOS 4.0, which should be finished by 19 September. As soon as that is out of the way, I'll code the custom comparison table, followed by other features. Sorry about the delays - days just seem to be too short nowadays :-(
|
| 2003-04-03 The login passwords have been sent out. I used email addresses that you supplied when joining Timesavers or donating, but if you happened to change it since then, please send me a note and I'll email you the new login details (several emails have bounced: slapcat, kjwolf, bernardwoods2002, knollr, karlynn, jdepew - please email me). So this is done and we can move ahead with the promised features :-)
|
| 2003-03-31 Well, it's the end of March and here is the truth: the Timesavers features are not ready yet. We have spent a fair amount of time on the site's internationalisation recently and while this is unlikely to be of help to most subscribers, it is kind of hard to refuse offers from enthusiastic translators willing to spread the message to countries where English is not widely understood. The internationalisation infrastructure is now in place and the translators can work independently, so we can move ahead with the promised features. Stay tuned as we'll bring you further news later this week.

| 2003-03-15 Things got slightly delayed due to the fact that my local telephone exchange suffered a major breakdown and I was without a phone line for 3 days. Also, I need to move the site to a new host. This has become a priority as the number of visitors keeps increasing (the main page alone gets nearly 15,000 unique visitors each day) and the current host is no longer able to maintain this kind of server load.
