What is DistroWatch |
| The DistroWatch web site was first published on 31 May 2001. The concept started as a very simple table comprising of 5 major distributions and the chart only compared a few features (price, version, release date) and a few package versions (Kernel, KDE, Gnome, XFree86, Apache). Trying to make it slightly more comprehensive and useful (and failing to find anything similar and up-to-date on the Internet), I have kept adding more distributions, features and packages until the table reached fairly reasonable state in terms of information provided. At that stage, I decided to share the table with the Linux community worldwide and moved it from a spreadsheet into an HTML document. The page was first mentioned on LinuxToday and on many other sites around the world. |

The readership |
| As of 1th quarter of 2004 and excluding mirror sites, the site serves approximately 1.8 million pages a month. The main index page is viewed by about 20,000 - 25,000 unique visitors each working day and 15,000 - 20,000 unique visitors on weekends, while visits to pages devoted to individual distributions vary substantially - from around 1,000 pages a day for major Linux distributions (Mandrake, Red Hat, Debian, Gentoo, SuSE) to about 20 a day for some of the lesser known and regional distributions. The majority (38.5%) visitors comes from the USA, followed by Canada (6.5%), Germany (4.9%), UK (4.6%) and Japan (4.2%). See the webalizer output for more accurate data. |

Advertising rates |
| At present, DistroWatch accepts new advertisements for the main index page and the resources page (articles, reviews, interviews). Two advertising styles are offered. The first one is a standard size banner (468x60 pixels) displayed right above the first news item on the front page and between introduction and the main article body on the resources pages. The second style are advertising areas within the two sidebars on the main page and right sidebars on the resources pages (the size vary, but it should not be larger than that of a 468x60 pixel banner). Both styles are charged per impression and both are charged at the following rates
The following rates apply for standard banner and sidebar advertisements:
• 25,000 impressions for $25.00 USD
• 50,000 impressions for $45.00 USD
• 100,000 impressions for $80.00 USD
• 500,000 impressions for $300.00 USD
• 1,000,000 impressions for $500.00 USD
To put this into perspective, $80 will buy you approximately 4-weeks' worth of advertising (shared with other advertisers). All new advertisers will get access to advertising reports, which display information about the number of impressions, number of banner clicks and basic information about each visitor who clicked on the banner (including the visitor's IP address, country of origin and browser string).
Two conditions:
- Only Linux and Open Source related products and services are accepted for advertising on DistroWatch.
- The advertisement must link to an external web page. Any requests to link the advertisement to another page on DistroWatch.com will be declined.
The advertising rates are negotiable.

Regional Advertising |
| Thanks to the GeoIP database it is possible to determine the geographical location of visitors browsing these pages. This opens up possibilities for regional advertising for more accurate targeting of intended audience. If you offer a product that is specifically designed for users in your own country, you can reduce the advertising cost by making your advertisement appear to visitors from your own country only.
For details of where the visitors come from, please visit out statistics page.
