Broadcasting powerhouse the BBC has thrown its weight behind the Ogg Vorbis open source MP3 standard. The BBC opened up live streaming of Radio 4 at the start of this year to test the latest Ogg codecs, particularly the latest Release Candidate 3 which also launched at the start of the year.

LinuxHardware.org has just published their results in the Pentium 4 verses Athlon XP war. In this review, the new Pentium 4 "Northwood" 2.2GHz is pitted against the Athlon XP 2000+. To level the playing field, both platforms use DDR memory which make for some interesting results. The usual benchmarks are included: Distributed.net, POVBench, Kernel Compile, Audio Encoding (Ogg Vorbis), Quake 3, and Unreal Tournament."

AOL files Suit against Microsoft

Dulles, VA -- January 22, 2002 -- Netscape Communications Corporation announced late Tuesday it has filed suit in the District Court of Washington DC against Microsoft Corporation to seek damages for the anticompetitive practices surrounding the promotion of Microsoft's popular web browser, Internet Explorer. This suit is not connected with the antitrust findings in the Justice Department'ss antitrust case, but seeks to use those findings to gain more specific remedies which will directly benefit AOL Time Warner's Netscape Communications subsidiary.

AOL denies bidding for Red Hat

The Washington Post reported a few days ago, that AOL is trying to buy Red Hat. Finally, AOL denied it. Red Hat has not released any official comments.

Lineo, the embedded Linux developer, has delivered a scathing attack on Microsoft's recently released white paper comparing Windows XP Embedded and embedded Linux. Lineo points out what it says are numerous inaccuracies and distortions designed to improve the image of Windows. At worst, the paper includes "lies," says Lineo.
